Worst Way to Cover ‘Gossip Girl’ by ‘Entertainment Weekly’

Gossip Girl is best watchable program if you abandon the following luxuries: convincing actors, character development, plot construction, conflict resolution, and expectations of how children age 16-20 act in the real world. In fact, toss aside all those expectations and Gossip Girl is like The Wire: A gritty, true-to-life portrayal of a corrupt, sleazy city. A city where palms can be greased with hundred dollar bills and lives can be changed with the snap of well-manicured fingers. Where Polish maids can hold better tales than any of the pretty young things. Still, some of us are on a time-delay when it comes to GG and like the experience of watching the soap unsullied. So having the show’s most critical reveal spoiled in a poorly written headline as we peruse the day’s gossip is frustrating. Thanks a lot Tim Stack at Entertainment Weekly! Spoilers ahead, if you hadn’t picked up on that yet.

Worst Way to Cover Gossip Girl

Gossip Girl

Gossip Girl recap: Dan, Olivia, and Vanessa get ReeeaaalllY close is the poorest way anyone tasked with covering the serial could’ve hinted to the only pre-Gaga bit of jaw-droppery GG could offer. Maybe it’s how the caps-lock that seems to be stuck or the profusion of vowels and “L” sounds, but that header spins the ménage à trois like an after-school stint at band practice wherein members from the brass section accidentally knocking instruments. And if the below clip is to be believed (you’re already spoiled, so why not!), “after-school” is definitely the best descriptive for the ho-hum moment.

Lions Gate Entertainment: Still waiting for cash flow

Lions Gate Entertainment

Lions Gate Entertainment

On the discussion of Lions Gate Entertainment’s (LGF) first-quarter results, we noted the disappointing statement of cash flows. Unfortunately, the company didn’t do much better in the second quarter. For the six-month period, Lions Gate used over $160 million for operations compared to the roughly $40 million used in the similar frame one year ago.

Of course, cash flow doesn’t always get the most coverage. Investors tend to get more excited by a swing to profitability. On that count, Lions Gate scored admirably, earning 26 cents per diluted share versus losing 44 cents per diluted share twelve months prior. Earnings.com indicates that analysts were really underestimating the Q2 income potential here: the call was for 6 cents per share.

This is why shares of the studio were rewarded with a bid in yesterday’s after-hours market. At the time writing, Lions Gate was up over 7%.

We can’t say they were as pleased with the data as the traders seemed to be. Besides the issue with cash flow, It’ll point out that a mere 3% increase in sales doesn’t cut it. However, It will concede that Lions Gate has generally done okay with the top line as of late.

Revenues are a tricky thing for a content business to control. Competitors such as Disney (DIS) and General Electric’s (GE) NBC Universal have had their share of problems with underperforming film slates. Also, coming to grips with the declining home video industry has been an ongoing struggle.

People don’t necessarily see a catalyst for Lions Gate that would help it to break out of the trading range it’s been in. For now, people going to stay on the sidelines. Cash flow will probably improve over time, but we’re wait for more information on Lions Gate’s current slate before undergoing additional due diligence (the performance of the latest Saw sequel certainly isn’t going to help the process).

TLC Exec Dishes on New Episodes of ‘Jon and Kate Plus 8′

Jon and Kate Plus 8

Jon and Kate Plus 8

There’s no stopping the network from filming the Gosselins on Jon and Kate Plus 8, as they’ve recently hinted at what viewers can expect upon the show’s return. On Monday, we’ll get to see the family once again, minus the scandal. Then again, Jon and Kate probably wouldn’t survive the entertainment world without that, would they?

TLC General Manager and President Eileen O’Neill spoke to audiences during the Television Critics Association panel held in Pasadena, California last Thursday. She announced what Jon and Kate Plus 8 holds in store for the fans.

“You’ll see Jon struggle in the kitchen trying to make pizza for his kids,” O’Neill announced. “You’ll see what its like when Kate has to put a tent up for the first time for her kids, who love to camp in their backyard. And she gets a little advice from her daughter who doesn’t think she does it quite as well as dad.”

It sounds as though they’re trying their best to avoid the issue of divorce. It’s been said that Jon and Kate Plus 8 would head to a new direction now that that’s occurred, but the network doesn’t seem too keen on putting the spotlight on the separation.

TLC’s Eileen O’Neill didn’t fully discuss the ladies that Jon Gosselin’s been attached to these days, from Kate Major to Hailey Glassman. The Jon and Kate Plus 8 patriarch has announced before that he wouldn’t dare introduce his girlfriends to his kids, but he didn’t say anything about bringing them on the show itself.

“As far as new people and places that may be cycling into Jon and Kate’s lives, we’re taking it on a case-by-case basis,” O’Neill stated.

The new episode airing this August 3 also features a change worth noting. Eileen O’Neill went on:”The show comes back this Monday and many of the episodes are still works in progress, but a couple of things you should know: The couch, the iconic couch, is gone and been replaced by separate interview chairs for Jon and Kate. You’re going to see two parents who love their kids more than ever and you’ll be seeing them separately parenting,”

The TLC executive also promised that they will never fail to prioritize the welfare of the stars as they keep filming the show. “Jon and Kate have never said they were perfect, which has made them relatable and created an undeniable connection with our viewers. We will continue to capture this family’s journey in a respectful and sensitive way.”

Madonna Visits Collapse Victims

The singer went to the home of Charles Criscenzo in Aix-en-Provence, and also saw three injured workers who are being treated at two Marseilles hospitals.

City mayor Jean-Claude Gaudin praised the pop star for demonstrating “such human qualities”.

Thursday’s accident, which killed two people and injured eight, has prompted a manslaughter investigation.

Tearful tribute

Charles Prow, a 23-year-old from Headingley, near Leeds, died in hospital as a result of his injuries.

Technicians had been setting up the stage at Marseille’s Velodrome stadium when the partially-built roof fell in, bringing down a crane.

Madonna first went to the home of Mr Criscenzo, where a cordon had been set up to keep the media at a distance.

She later went to the Conception hospital to visit a technician who suffered a broken hip.

The star went without an official escort and carried a large bouquet of white roses before going on to a second hospital.

But she was unable to visit the site of the stage collapse where an official investigation is now under way.

Madonna paid a tearful tribute to the accident victims at her concert in Udine, Italy, on Thursday.

Her next tour date is due to take place in Barcelona on Tuesday, while reimbursements for the cancelled Marseilles date are being made available, according to her publicist.

Jay-Z Tops Forbes’ Hip-Hop Cash Kings 2009

The economy has been rough on everybody, but as Forbes’ Hip-Hop Cash Kings list proves, it still pays to be a huge mainstream rapper with multiple business ventures.

Jay-Z - Hip-Hop's Cash Kings 2009

Jay-Z - Hip-Hop's Cash Kings 2009

Even though he took a 57 percent pay cut compared to last year, Jay-Z still managed to come in at #1 as the richest rapper of the year. By Forbes’ estimate (based on earnings between June 2008 and June 2009), Jigga pulled in $35 million in the past year, owing mostly to his international tour and his ownership stakes in the NBA’s New Jersey Nets and New York’s sports/strip club 40/40. Why did Hova take such a huge pay cut? Because last year’s figure was boosted heavily by the $150 million deal the rapper signed with Live Nation, which provided him with an immediate cash windfall.

Last year’s winner, 50 Cent, slipped to fourth place with $20 million. Again, 50 owes most of his fortune to diversification, such as his Vitamin Water deal, G-Unit clothing line and numerous licensing deals (including a video game). Between 50 and Jay stands Kanye West (who cashed checks on his multiplatinum album 808s & Heartbreak and his juggernaut Glow in the Dark Tour) with $25 million and Diddy (whose ever-expanding portfolio includes a brand of premium vodka and his Sean John clothing line) with $30 million.

The rest of the list proves that rappers are making a great deal of money doing things that have nothing to do with actual rapping. Even the producers on the list — like Pharrell Williams ($16 million) and Timbaland ($17 million) have their hands in accessory lines and film production. If all else fails, you just need to create a timeless album, which is how Dr. Dre came in at #11 on the list. Though he executive-produced Eminem’s platinum Relapse, the producer’s $13 million came primarily from royalties collected on classic releases like The Chronic.

Angelina beat her partner Brad Pitt’s ex-wife Jennifer Aniston, who came second in the list with earnings of $25 million.

In a statement, the magazine said: “Much of Angelina’s earnings came from her share of the profits on ‘Wanted’, but she also scored a fat upfront cheque for ‘Salt’, an action film originally slated to star Tom Cruise, in which Jolie plays a CIA agent who is accused of being a Russian spy.”

‘Mamma Mia’ star Meryl Streep was placed third with an income of $24 million, while ‘Sex and the City‘ actress Sarah Jessica Parker came fourth with $23 million in earnings.

Cameron Diaz was ranked fifth generating $20 million, while Reese Witherspoon and Sandra Bullock tied for sixth place after making $15 million each.

Nicole Kidman and Drew Barrymore tied for eighth place, followed by Renee Zellweger.

Money earned from clothing, perfume or accessories lines was also taken into account.

Miley Cyrus Email Hacker Still Under Investigation in MySpace Spamming Case

The person who hacked Miley Cyrus’ email and lived to brag about it is still a person of interest as far as the FBI is concerned.

Agents raided Josh Holly’s Tennessee apartment in October, seizing three computers, a phone and a Sony Handycam in the process.

A judge issued a warrant Jan. 15 to mine the gadgets for evidence and an FBI spokesman tells E! News that Holly, who last summer accessed one of Cyrus’ old email accounts and plastered old racy pictures of her on the web, is still under investigation.

While not in police custody, Holly has kept pretty busy hacking celebrities’ MySpace email accounts and spamming to their “friends.”

According to an FBI affidavit obtained by E! News, Holly “admitted he had been generating significant revenue by engaging in what is commonly called ’spamming’…by gaining unauthorized access to various Internet based accounts.”

He chose celebrities “because of the high volume of Internet traffic they attracted,” the document states.

Holly remains a free man and his whereabouts are currently unknown, the FBI says.

Last month, the 19-year-old Tennessean told Wired.com’s Threat Level blog, which first broke the Miley-hacker story, that he had earned $110,000 (although half went to an accomplice in Israel) spamming MySpace users after hacking into accounts belonging to Chris Brown, Rihanna, Linkin Park, Fall Out Boy and various others.

Holly says he would send mass emails from the celebrities’ sites “telling fans that the band would call their phone and send them a ring tone if they clicked on a link and entered their details.”

He was paid between $5 and $12 per person who responded to the ads.

“Once I go to court I can’t say ‘not guilty’. There’s no way I can get out of this at all,” Holly told Threat Level. “Not even O.J.’s lawyers or Michael Jackson’s lawyers can get me out of this. To be blunt, I was an idiot and I didn’t delete any of my [hard drives]. I never thought they would raid me. They’re going to get full proof evidence of everything that I’ve said I’ve done.”

Formula One: Girls, glamour fuel racing dreams

PARIS (AFP) — Lewis Hamilton has a world title, millions of dollars in his Swiss bank account and a pop star girlfriend who dreams of having ‘beautiful angel babies’.

As Formula One embarks on another season, the sport’s high-octane attraction for girls and glamour looks as powerful as ever, despite its cash and charisma crisis.

Hamilton dates Pussycat Dolls singer Nicole Scherzinger, while 2008 champion Kimi Raikkonen married a former Miss Scandinavia.

Jenson Button’s mediocre career behind the wheel has been more than compensated by a romance with a TV reality show winner and now a Japanese model.

But despite even international motorsport federation boss Max Mosley being at the centre of a lurid tabloid sex scandal, F1 drivers of the 21st century are more mild bunch than wild child.

It wasn’t always so.

In the 1960s and 1970s, drivers, less cocooned by corporate concerns and strapped into what were often four-wheel death-traps, were acutely aware they could be living on borrowed time.

One of Hamilton’s predecessors as world champion, James Hunt, who took the title in 1976, was a playboy racer of the old school; in his case, the school being Wellington.

Hunt had a succession of beautiful girlfriends, including supermodel Jane Birbeck, and was married twice.

His first wife Suzy, a model, left him for hellraiser actor Richard Burton while his second marriage to Sarah ended in divorce. Hunt was to be married a third time, but he died of a heart attack just hours after proposing. He was only 45.

The blond Hunt was never an establishment figure, too fond of the bottle and a good party who’d often arrive at official functions dressed in jeans and T-shirt.

Another blond British driver Mike Hawthorn was also a world champion.

His glory came in 1958; a year later he was dead, just 29 years old.

Hawthorn, who often raced wearing a bow-tie, was engaged to 21-year-old Vogue model Jean Howarth and the two planned to be married before Hawthorn’s death on a public road in southern England.

The sport’s first world champions, still scarred by memories of the Second World War, never attracted similar, wild headlines.

Nino Farina, who won the inaugural 1950 championship, married Elsa Giaretto, an elegant businesswoman who ran a Turin fashion house.

Five-time winner Juan Manuel Fangio, who once claimed ‘women rule our lives, don’t they?’, never married, but the balding, bow-legged Argentine enjoyed a 20-year relationship with one woman.

Stability worked too, four decades later, for Michael Schumacher whose seven world titles came about through talent, devotion as well as settled domestic life.

Schumacher met his wife Corinna in 1990, before he had made it into a Formula One team and all of its traditional distractions.

“I was looking for the life I started to live together with Corinna,” he once told a interviewer. “That was my dream because I don’t like to be alone.”

Maybe that explains why Scherzinger told The Sun newspaper that her desire was to have ‘beautiful angel babies’ with Hamilton and why Hunt, with his wild days behind him, spent his last years rearing budgies.
